How to get more Google reviews for your shop in India
Updated 28 October 2026 · By the Revvo team
Most happy customers never leave a review. Not because they do not want to, but because nobody asked at the right moment and it felt like effort. Fix those two things and reviews start coming in every week.
Why reviews matter for a local shop
When someone searches “salon near me” or “jewellers in Pune”, Google shows a map with three shops first. People compare the star rating, the number of reviews and how recent they are, then call or walk in. A shop with fresh, detailed reviews looks alive and trusted. A shop with 12 reviews from 2022 looks forgotten, even if the service is great.
1. Ask at the happiest moment
Timing does most of the work. Ask when the customer is pleased and still in front of you:
- Salon or spa: when they look in the mirror and smile at the result.
- Restaurant or café: when you bring the bill and they say the food was good.
- Jewellery or clothes shop: after billing, while you pack their purchase.
- Clinic or service: at the end, when they thank you.
Asking a week later by SMS works far less often. The feeling has gone.
2. Use one simple line
Staff do not need a script, just one natural sentence. For example:
“If you liked it, a Google review really helps a small shop like ours. Just scan this, it takes 20 seconds.”
Say it to every customer, not only the ones you think are happy. That is what Google expects, and it keeps your reviews honest.
3. Make it 20 seconds, not 5 minutes
Every extra step loses people. The usual drop-off points are:
- Finding your shop on Google. Give them a direct link that opens your review box. See how to find your review link.
- Typing on a phone. A QR code at the counter means no typing a link. See how to make a review QR code.
- Not knowing what to write. Many customers stare at an empty box and give up. Suggest what to mention: what they got done, what they liked, the staff member who helped.
4. Put the QR code where people wait
- On the billing counter, at eye level, next to the payment QR.
- On each table (a small table tent), or inside the bill folder.
- At the salon mirror or reception desk.
- On packaging or the carry bag for takeaway and delivery.
5. Follow up on WhatsApp the same day
If a customer said “I will do it later”, send the review link on WhatsApp the same evening with a short thank you. Keep it to one message. Do not send reminders again and again.
6. Reply to every review
Replies show new customers that a real person runs the shop, and they encourage more people to review. Keep them short and personal. Our reply examples cover 5-star, mixed and 1-star reviews.
What not to do
Google removes reviews, and can restrict your profile, if you break its rules. Never:
- Give a discount, free item or cashback in return for a review.
- Ask only happy customers and quietly skip unhappy ones.
- Write reviews yourself, or ask staff, friends or family to review you.
- Buy reviews from any agency, however “safe” they say it is.
The full list, in plain English, is in Google review rules for shop owners.
Questions shop owners ask
How many Google reviews does a shop need?
There is no magic number. What helps most is a steady flow of recent, genuine reviews, so new customers see that people visited this month, not only years ago.
Can I ask customers for a Google review?
Yes. Google allows businesses to ask customers for reviews. It does not allow rewards for reviews, or asking only the customers you expect to be happy.
What is the fastest way to get Google reviews?
Ask every customer at the moment they are happiest, and make it a 20-second job with a QR code that opens your review box directly.
